Australia imports over 90% of its refined fuel. With only two domestic refineries remaining — Ampol’s Lytton facility in Brisbane and Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery in Victoria — the country is heavily dependent on imported petrol, diesel, and jet fuel shipped primarily from refineries in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan.
Unlike countries with large strategic petroleum reserves, Australia’s domestic stockholdings are measured in weeks rather than months. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) publishes weekly Minimum Stockholding Obligation (MSO) figures that report how many days of onshore stock the country holds for each fuel type. These figures also show the surplus percentage — how far above the mandatory minimum the current holdings sit.
AussieOilWatch displays the official DCCEEW stock-day figures and surplus percentages directly from the government’s Power BI report, without applying any burn-rate modelling or extrapolation. The countdown timer subtracts elapsed time since the last publication to give an approximate remaining figure, but it is an illustrative estimate — not a live tank sensor feed. When new weekly data is published, the timer resets to the fresh figure. Reserve data is polled from DCCEEW every 60 minutes; the dashboard re-renders every 5 minutes. When live data is unavailable, the most recently fetched snapshot is served as a fallback.
Station-level fuel prices come from official state and territory government APIs across NSW/ACT (FuelCheck), QLD, SA, WA (FuelWatch), VIC, NT, and TAS. Each API is polled every 30 minutes. Prices are filtered through a sanity band of 60–800 c/L to remove sentinel values and obvious outliers from upstream data.
